Aim of the department

The service is funded by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) and with our partners our purpose is to:

  • inform, signpost, develop, advise, and
  • help to improve the skills and knowledge of managers, staff and volunteers to enable them to better deliver quality services for the users they serve to improve outcomes for children and young people.

We provide a dedicated information service which includes a dedicated area on the Children England website providing key information on workforce development.

There is also a resource area where you can find out about latest developments, toolkits, ‘Best Practice', and archived e-bulletins.

We also produce a monthly Workforce Development e-bulletin which is designed to keep you up to date with the latest developments in workforce development issues in the children, young people, and family sector. Simplifying the complexity and range of demands. The bulletin will set out the key priority issues and those opportunities that are available to you to help improve your workforce and raise standards.

Learning and Networking

We facilitate contact between individuals, infrastructure organisations, sector skills bodies and agencies, and the Third Sector (also known as the Voluntary, Community, and Faith Sector) to learn about practice and for collaboration.

In addition to this Children England continue to represent the sector regarding key workforce policy areas and responding with and on behalf of the sector to consultations.  If you want to stay involved in the ‘hot' topics you can join our Third Sector Stakeholder forum, which, in collaboration with NAVCA and NCVYS will look at areas of specialism in the children's workforce when appropriate and would like to invite you to consider applying to join the Third Sector Children's Workforce Stakeholder Group.

The Third Sector Children's Workforce Stakeholder Group is primarily a virtual forum designed to receive, comment and influence on policy and practice issues in relation to workforce development. The likelihood is that this will mainly be done through quarterly virtual meetings held on key priority topics agreed with CWDC. It is anticipated that bi-yearly meetings may also take place. The Third Sector Children's Workforce Stakeholder Group has no decision making powers. Its purpose is to work alongside established advisory and reference groups within the field.

If you would like to join, please read the Invite and complete an Application Form.

We also help to organise and contribute to presentations, workshops, conferences, and publications.
