Social Care

Social care is all about helping children and young people, and their families/carers to live their lives to the full, by working with them towards independence and keeping them safe and protected from harm.

This might mean offering practical or emotional support to overcome difficult situations or finding somewhere else for a child or young person to live if necessary.

The Government is keen to ensure there is a social care workforce that provides high-quality services and that meets the challenge of new ways of working.

Social care practitioners are a vital part of the workforce, working together with social workers, health, education workers, as part of integrated services in  the Team Around the Child and covers a wide range of disciplines, including:

Skills for Care offer a wide range of practical support to workers entering the social care sector.

The Common Induction Standards and the Common Core lay the foundation for the development of this part of the workforce. They set out the skills and knowledge that are essential to fulfill your day to day responsibilities.

Skills for Care have developed a series of resources to support employers with their recruitment initiatives which can be located here

Codes of Practice for social care practitioners

The General Social Care Council (GSCC) Codes of Practice apply to all social care practitioners and employers. For those in Ofsted regulated settings the Codes of Practice are taken into account as part of the inspection process. The Codes of Practice should underpin best practice.
